The Working Committee of the United National Party (UNP) has reached a unanimous decision today (20) to commence discussions with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) to form an alliance.

The committee convened today (20) afternoon at the UNP headquarters ‘Sirikotha’ in Pita Kotte, under the patronage of former president and party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Working Committee has also decided to engage in discussions with other political parties to contest under the United National Front.

Further, it was decided that discussions regarding the alliance with the SJB will be led by UNP deputy leader Ruwan Wijewardene and general secretary Thalatha Atukorale.

It was also emphasized that there is a necessity to reach a final agreement by the first week of February to avoid prolonging the discussions between the two parties.

The SJB’s Working Committee has already approved the proposal to engage in discussions with the UNP.

A committee was appointed under the leadership of general secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara who will head the discussions from the SJB side.

Committee members include senior lawmaker Kabir Hashim and youth leader MP Harshana Rajakaruna.

Meanwhile, the ‘Dinana Dakuna Collective‘ states that building right-wing political unity cannot solely be done by the two parties coming together. In order to realise its full potential, they emphasized that a political alliance based on right-wing ideological unity is essential.
