A high-level review meeting on the implementation of 2026 Budget proposals has underscored the government’s push to accelerate stalled and ongoing development projects across multiple sectors, amid concerns over delays and operational bottlenecks.
The meeting, held at the Presidential Secretariat, was chaired by Presidential Secretary, Nandika Sanath Kumanayake and focused on the progress of ministry-level projects as well as special policy initiatives outlined in the budget.
According to officials, the discussions centred on identifying implementation challenges and determining urgent corrective measures needed to ensure timely delivery of development targets.
A wide range of ministries came under review, including Defence; Finance, Planning and Economic Development; Digital Economy; Foreign Affairs; Foreign Employment and Tourism; Agriculture; Livestock; Lands and Irrigation; Transport; Highways and Urban Development; Ports and Civil Aviation; Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government; Trade and Commerce; Food Security and Cooperative Development; Justice and National Integration; Women and Child Affairs; Rural Development; Social Security and Community Empowerment; Public Security; Youth Affairs and Sports; Environment; and Housing, Construction and Water Supply.
Officials familiar with the discussions said project progress varied significantly across sectors, with some initiatives facing administrative delays, coordination gaps, and procurement-related challenges.
Kumanayake has stressed the importance of resolving issues through coordinated engagement among all relevant institutions, noting that delays in implementation ultimately affect the delivery of public services and development benefits.
He has also emphasised that expediting project execution is a shared responsibility across the public sector, particularly at a time when the government is seeking to translate budgetary allocations into tangible outcomes.
The review comes as authorities face growing pressure to improve efficiency in public investment management, with policymakers increasingly focused on ensuring that budget commitments do not remain on paper but are reflected in on-the-ground development.
Further monitoring meetings are expected as part of a broader effort to track implementation performance across ministries and fast-track priority projects under the 2026 fiscal plan.
