Rice, kottu and tea prices to fall after LP gas price cut

Consumers are set to receive modest relief from rising food costs, with the Canteen and Restaurant Owners’ Association announcing price reductions on several popular food and beverage items following the latest cut in Liquefied petroleum (LP) gas prices.

The association said the prices of a packet of rice, fried rice and kottu will be reduced by Rs. 15 with effect from midnight Saturday (4).

In addition, the prices of plain tea, milk tea and a range of short eats will be reduced by Rs. 5.

Restaurant owners said the decision was made after the recent reduction in LP gas prices lowered one of the industry’s key operating costs. LP gas is widely used by restaurants, hotels and canteens across the country for food preparation, making its price a significant factor in determining menu prices.

The move is expected to provide some relief to consumers, particularly office workers, students and daily wage earners who depend on affordable meals from canteens and eateries.

While the price cuts are relatively modest, they mark one of the few occasions in recent years that reductions in fuel or energy costs have been directly passed on to customers by the food service sector.

The association expressed hope that the lower prices would help ease the financial burden on consumers while encouraging more people to patronise restaurants and canteens amid challenging economic conditions.
