A group from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is reportedly obstructing discussions exploring the possibility of a merger with the United National Party.

A spokesperson for the SJB said that a group, including a MP who came to parliament from the national list, is trying to sabotage this effort out of fear of losing their positions in the party.

Although it is said that the two parties are planning to contest the local government elections to be held in April under a common symbol, the spokesperson said that such a merger will not happen given the current situation.

He added that one party leader is also not very keen over a potential merger.
