Deputy Minister of Agriculture Namal Karunaratne said that the nationwide census of nuisance wildlife conducted today was very successful.

He said that the majority of the public had participated in the census with great enthusiasm.

The Deputy Minister also shared that his wife and son had conducted the animal census on his small piece of land of approximately 60 perches, and spotted three toque macaques.

He expressed his gratitude to the public, government officials, media organizations, and everyone else who had extended their support.

Some 40,000 local officials were deployed to count many crop damaging animals including wild boar, peacocks, and monkeys near farms and homes during a five-minute period on Saturday morning.

Sri Lanka had also removed several species from its protected list in 2023, including all three of its monkey species as well as peacocks and wild boars, allowing farmers to kill them.
