Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday (28) recorded a statement at the Bribery Commission for nearly three hours regarding comments he made about Badulla District MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, who is currently in remand custody over allegations of financial misappropriation.

Wickremesinghe appeared before the Commission in response to a summons, after informing through his Attorney last week that he would attend following his unavailability on an earlier scheduled date.

Speaking to reporters outside the Commission, the former President’s attorney confirmed that Wickremesinghe had provided a detailed, 10-page statement during the session. “He recorded a statement for nearly three hours. Bribery Commission officials engaged with him in a cordial manner. Now it is over, and he has returned home,” the attorney said.

Commenting further, he explained that Wickremesinghe’s statement sought to clarify that his previous remarks concerning MP Dassanayake were made to ensure the public was properly informed.

“Most government institutions that are allocated funds from the Central Government tend to place the money in fixed deposits without utilising it. A new law was introduced requiring unused funds to be returned to the government. The former President explained this background to the Bribery Commission today,” the attorney added.

It was also confirmed that no further summons have been issued for the former President to reappear before the Commission.
