Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has lodged an appeal with the Election Commission, protesting the unlawful use of her name and photographs by the ‘People’s Alliance’ during their propaganda activities for the 2025 local government election.

In a letter addressed to the Commission, Kumaratunga stated that she had become aware of posters and leaflets bearing her name and image being distributed by the ‘People’s Alliance’, which is contesting under the ‘chair’ symbol in areas within the Attanagalla Pradeshiya Sabha.

The former President made it clear that she has no affiliation with the ‘People’s Alliance’ and had already communicated to the party her objection to the use of her name and likeness in their election campaign.

Despite this, the party has reportedly continued its unauthorised use of her identity, prompting Kumaratunga to highlight that such actions constitute a breach of election laws.

In her appeal, Kumaratunga requested the Election Commission to take appropriate measures to address the matter and to instruct the ‘People’s Alliance’ to immediately cease the use of her name and images in their campaign materials.
