Four individuals who had travelled to Kandy to visit the Sri Dalada Maligawa have died, according to Dr. Iresha Fernando, Director of the Kandy National Hospital.
The deceased were aged 69, 70, 74, and 80. Dr. Fernando stated that post-mortem examinations confirmed all four individuals were over the age of 65.
The cause of death for one of the devotees was identified as a heart attack. The hospital’s forensic officer has referred the remaining three cases to the coroner, issuing an open verdict pending further investigation.
In the past seven days, approximately 300 people have been admitted to the Kandy National Hospital for various health conditions.
According to Dr. Fernando, many of them had fainted due to dehydration, requiring hospitalisation.
In response to the increased number of pilgrims, nine health centres have been established around the Sri Dalada Maligawa.
Nearly 3,000 people have received treatment at these centres over the past few days.
Additionally, seven Suwaseriya ambulances have been deployed to provide emergency medical transport for those who fall ill while visiting the temple, said Senaka Thalagala, Director of Regional Health Services for the Kandy District.
