Deputy Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe has dismissed reports suggesting that Sri Lanka currently holds fuel reserves sufficient for two months, stating that no such claim has been made by any government official.
Speaking during a programme on Derana, Jayasinghe said that while orders for fuel sufficient for the next two months have been placed and secured, this does not mean the fuel is physically stored in the country.
“There are no facilities within Sri Lanka to store that volume of fuel,” he said, adding that previous governments have failed to invest in necessary infrastructure, including proper storage and pipeline systems.
“The government has only stated that the required fuel for the next two months has been ordered, not stored,” Jayasinghe added.
However, speaking at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on June 17, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said that there are adequate fuel reserves in the country to meet the national demand for two months.
The Energy Ministry also issued a statement assuring the public that the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) holds sufficient fuel stocks for the next two months.
