Sajith demands answers over the release of 323 red-flagged containers

There is a debate in the country regarding 323 containers allegedly released without customs inspection, and the current President, who is the Minister in charge of the subject, has not taken steps to explain the matter to the country, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said.

Addressing the customs container issue in the parliament under Standing Orders 27 (2), he questioned what changes are being made to expedite the container clearance process in the country.

The Opposition Leader, who had inquired about the number of ships turned away due to the severe delay in container clearance at the Colombo Port last month and the losses incurred by the government, also questioned the adverse conditions affecting the country due to this.

He inquired the number of containers that were red-flagged and required mandatory inspection by the risk management units among the 323 containers that were released without customs inspection, and the reasons for releasing these containers.

He called on the government to disclose the materials contained in these containers and who was responsible for releasing it without confirming that the 323 containers did not contain illegal or material unfit for human consumption.
