China and Sri Lanka are set to mark two major milestones in their longstanding relationship in 2027 — the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the 75th anniversary of the historic Rubber-Rice Pact — as Beijing signals plans to further deepen its strategic partnership with Colombo.
Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Wei Huaxiang said China was ready to work with Sri Lanka to strengthen bilateral cooperation, implement agreements reached by the leaders of the two countries and advance what he described as a strategic cooperative partnership based on mutual assistance and longstanding friendship.
The Ambassador made the remarks at a reception in Colombo on Wednesday (23) to mark the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
The twin anniversaries will provide a major platform next year to reflect on a relationship that has evolved from the Rubber-Rice Pact of 1952 into a broad partnership covering infrastructure, trade, technology, education and development assistance.
Wei described the Rubber-Rice Pact as an enduring example of solidarity and mutual support between the two countries during difficult periods.
More than seven decades later, China’s economic engagement with Sri Lanka has expanded significantly, with the Ambassador highlighting major projects including Colombo Port City and Hambantota Port under the Belt and Road Initiative.
He said cooperation under the initiative had produced tangible results, while stressing that bilateral ties also extended to projects with a direct impact on the Sri Lankan public.
Among them, he cited the China-Sri Lanka Joint Research and Demonstration Centre for Water Technology and China’s continued provision of school uniform materials.
According to Wei, China has donated school uniform materials to Sri Lanka for four consecutive years, benefiting more than 4.4 million students nationwide.
China is also preparing to deploy its intelligent meteorological early-warning solution, “Mazu”, in Sri Lanka to support efforts to address climate change and strengthen disaster prevention and mitigation.
A partnership tested by crises
The Ambassador also highlighted instances of assistance between the two countries during emergencies, presenting them as evidence of the practical dimension of bilateral ties.
He recalled the participation of the Sri Lankan Navy in the search and rescue operation for the Chinese fishing vessel Lupeng Yuanyu 028 in 2023.
Sri Lanka also provided emergency medical treatment to a crew member of the Chinese research vessel Shiyan 6 in March this year, he said.
Wei referred to China’s emergency assistance to Sri Lanka during the COVID-19 pandemic and following Cyclone Ditwah as further examples of cooperation during times of crisis.
He said the two countries had continued to respect and support each other since establishing diplomatic relations, with cooperation now extending across a wide range of sectors.
Looking beyond the anniversaries
As the two countries prepare for the 2027 commemorations, Beijing is also positioning the relationship within a broader geopolitical and economic framework.
Wei said China was prepared to work with Sri Lanka to uphold multilateralism and international fairness and justice, while highlighting Sri Lanka’s role as an important founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement.
The Ambassador also pointed to China’s growing economic weight, saying the country had become the world’s largest manufacturing nation and second-largest economy, with GDP exceeding approximately US$20 trillion.
He said China’s economy grew by 4.7% in the first half of 2026.
For Sri Lanka, the approaching anniversaries offer an opportunity not only to commemorate seven decades of diplomatic relations, but also to assess how the partnership is evolving amid changing economic and geopolitical circumstances.
The relationship that began with a landmark rubber-for-rice agreement in the early 1950s has since expanded into infrastructure, investment, technology, education, disaster management and diplomatic cooperation.
2027, therefore, will mark both a celebration of the past and a point at which Beijing and Colombo are expected to set out the next chapter of their longstanding partnership.
