The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today (3) ordered the release on bail of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa in connection with the controversial Krrish transaction. However, the MP will remain in remand custody as he is still being held in connection with separate legal proceedings.

While granting bail in the Krrish-related case, the court also imposed an overseas travel ban on Rajapaksa.

The court delivered its decision today following consideration of the bail application submitted on behalf of the parliamentarian, who had been remanded over allegations relating to a controversial land transaction involving Indian real estate company Krrish Group.

The case concerns allegations that Rajapaksa had accepted a bribe of Rs. 100 million in connection with the transfer of land at Transworks Square in Colombo Fort to the Krrish Group for a proposed multipurpose development project.

According to the allegations, the payment was made in exchange for facilitating the transfer of the state-owned land to the company for the proposed development.

The Krrish transaction has been the subject of a lengthy legal investigation, with the alleged payment and the circumstances surrounding the proposed land transfer forming the basis of the proceedings against the MP.

Despite today’s bail order, Rajapaksa will not be released from custody immediately, as he has yet to secure bail in another case in which he remains remanded.

The latest court decision therefore does not bring an immediate end to his detention, with his continued custody dependent on the outcome of the separate legal proceedings.
