The National System Operator (NSO) expects to restore Sri Lanka’s national electricity grid by around 6.30 p.m. today (17), as efforts to reconnect areas affected by the islandwide power outage continue.
In an update on the blackout, the NSO said electricity restoration had been progressing area by area since around noon, with efforts underway to restore the national grid fully by this evening.
The operator also rejected reports circulating that several power plants had broken down as a result of the total system failure.
According to the NSO, all hydropower plants that were operational before the incident are now functioning and being used in efforts to restore the national grid.
The Norochcholai Coal Power Plant, meanwhile, has been shut down in accordance with standard operating procedures, the NSO said, adding that there were no reports of breakdowns at any generating plant.
“The system is being successfully restored area by area since noon. NSO hopes to restore the national grid by around 6:30 p.m.,” the operator said.
The islandwide blackout was reported at around 11.45 a.m. today, following what the NSO described as a system instability in the transmission network that resulted in a total failure of the electricity system.
The outage disrupted electricity supplies across the country, prompting the authorities to begin restoration efforts.
The NSO has not yet provided a detailed explanation of the circumstances that triggered the system instability.
The restoration process remains ongoing, with the operator targeting the full restoration of the national grid by this evening.
