Gazette issued on term of newly elected Local Government Members

Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, Chandana Abayarathna, has issued a Gazette notification specifying that the term of members of 337 Local Government Authorities will commence on June 2, 2025.

The notification was issued under the powers vested in the Minister by Paragraph (b) of Sub-Section (1) and Section 10 of the Municipal Councils Ordinance, Chapter 252.

The 337 Local Government Authorities include 27 Municipal Councils, 36 Urban Councils, and 274 Pradeshiya Sabhas.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has been officially informed that the Local Authorities Elections (Special Provisions) Bill has been passed in Parliament with an overwhelming majority, without any amendments.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government.

Following the official notification to the Election Commission, the necessary steps for conducting the Local Government elections will be undertaken by the commission.
