SJB to consider joining Wickremesinghe’s call for a united opposition

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) says it will take a collective decision on whether to join the political movement proposed by former President and United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, aimed at countering what Wickremesinghe termed a slide into constitutional dictatorship in Sri Lanka.

SJB General Secretary and MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara said the party would deliberate internally before making any commitments.

Wickremesinghe, addressing the UNP’s 79th National Convention on Saturday (20), proposed launching a mass opposition movement, urging all political parties that value democracy to stand together.

He called for a campaign of 1,000 rallies, satyagrahas, and public demonstrations across the island.

The proposal comes at a politically sensitive time, following Wickremesinghe’s arrest in August — a move widely condemned by several opposition parties, including the SJB, which joined in a united front against what they described as the government’s “undemocratic agenda.”
