The National People’s Power (NPP)-controlled Kolonna Pradeshiya Sabha saw its inaugural budget proposal defeated during yesterday’s (06) monthly session.

The session began at around 10:00 a.m. under the chairmanship of Sampath Gunasinghe, who was elected Chairman in a secret ballot following the last local government election.

This election had given the NPP nine seats, while opposition parties – Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) with five, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) with three, the United National Party (UNP) with one, and the Sarvajana Balaya with one – collectively held ten seats.

The NPP presented its first budget proposal this morning, aiming to outline its fiscal priorities for the Kolonna Pradeshiya Sabha.

However, in the afternoon vote, opposition members worked together to defeat the budget, highlighting the continuing influence of the minority bloc in shaping local governance despite the NPP’s relative numerical advantage.

The outcome underscores the challenges faced by the NPP leadership in consolidating its authority within the Kolonna Pradeshiya Sabha, even after securing the Chairmanship in a tightly contested vote.
