Batalanda debate: Rohini slams JVP’s role in period of terror

The 1985-91 terror period could’ve been averted if not for the foolish, conceited and power-hungry politics of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), charged MP Rohini Kaviratne.

Joining the parliamentary debate on the Batalanda commission report yesterday (10), she tabled a list of persons murdered by the JVP and DJVP and made a lengthy explanation.

As one who escaped death in 1989, Kaviratne said, she has a responsibility given her by fate to take up the matter of that terror period.

Every ruler forgot the terror unleased by the JVP and never tried to use it to gain power, she said.

There had been five opportunities to prevent bloodshed, all of which were left unused by the arrogance of the JVP, she said.

The lists tabled by Kaviratne includes 6,661 UNP and other party members murdered by the JVP, which, she said is responsible for the killing of a total of 41,813 persons during its second wave of terror.

She said all those documents, kept hidden in the past 35 years, also detail bomb attacks and other incidents totalling seven.

Had there been a hint of flexibility on the JVP’s part, that period of terror could’ve been prevented from escalating further, said Kaviratne.
