President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is expected to appoint Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, the current Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, as the new secretary to the ministry, according to highly placed government sources.

The appointment comes in the wake of the retirement of former secretary Mahinda Siriwardana.

Dr. Suriyapperuma, who entered Parliament via the National List representing the National People’s Power (NPP), is expected to resign from his parliamentary seat in order to assume the new administrative role.

He is scheduled to formally take up duties at the Ministry of Finance on Monday.

Sources further indicated that a senior professional from the private sector is likely to be nominated to Parliament to fill the National List seat vacated by Dr. Suriyapperuma.
