Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe says that the government will be able to reduce the electricity bill by one-third after new renewable energy sources are added to the national grid.

He said this in response to a question raised regarding the statements made by the NPP leadership during election rallies that tariffs imposed on electricity would be slashed immediately.

However, addressing an election rally in Matara on October 30, 2024, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that electricity tariffs will be reduced in a few days.

“The Opposition claimed during the presidential election campaign that the NPP government will not be able to provide continuous electricity supply. We will not only ensure continuous electricity supply but we will also reduce electricity tariffs in a few days,” Dissanayake said.
