Anuradha Tennakoon, Chairman of the National Farmers’ Union, stated that approximately 500,000 acres of paddy lands under both minor irrigation channels and major irrigation reservoirs have not yet received the fertiliser subsidy for the current Yala season.

He noted that paddy lands under major irrigation schemes, including Hurulu Wewa, Rajanganaya, and Padaviya, have already been cultivated as well as those under minor irrigation systems. Water release for paddy lands under the Mahaweli Scheme is scheduled for 20 April.

Tennakoon added that although cultivation has been completed across the Eastern Province, the fertiliser subsidy funds have not yet been disbursed, and that applications are still being processed at Agricultural Service Centers.
