Police are investigating accusations against a number of former ruling politicians that they had forged documents and sold state-owned land in many areas.

Already, ex-minister Mervyn Silva and three others are under custody over one incident in 2010 involving a land worth more than Rs. 75 million and owned by Kiribathgoda Pradeshiya Sabha.

Arrested by the Financial Crimes Investigation Unit (FCID) under provisions in the public property act, they were ordered remanded by Mahara magistrate Kanchana Neranjana de Silva.

Also to be arrested with regard to this are former minister Prasanna Ranaweera, a former Pradeshiya Sabha member, a businessman and a lawyer.

Details are emerging about more such instances involving ex-ministers and MPs.

The culprits are said to be planning to go into hiding to evade the law.
