Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala assured Parliament yesterday (27) that there has been no significant increase in crime rates in the country recently.

Responding to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, the Minister provided data indicating a similar crime trend in the first two months of this year compared to previous years.

Minister Wijepala revealed that 14 incidents of crime were reported during the first two months of 2025, a figure identical to that of 2024.

He further highlighted that a comparable number of incidents, 12 each, were reported in the same period of 2016 and 2018, emphasizing the stability of crime rates over the years.

Minister Wijepala’s statement comes amid growing concerns over public safety due to the escalating crime wave in recent months.
