A confidential report pertaining to the murder of underworld figure, Ganeemulla Sanjeewa, has been submitted to the court by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD).

The report was presented during proceedings at the official residence of Colombo’s Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmalige, where ongoing investigations are being reviewed.

Based on the report’s findings, the court has issued several directives to the police as part of the investigation into the murder, which occurred on February 19, 2025.

The court has ordered that statements be taken from certain detainees held at the Boossa Prison, who are suspected of being involved in the incident.

It is alleged that prison officers or personnel assigned to Sanjeewa’s security detail could have had a role to play in the murder, prompting the CCD to widen its investigations.

Sources suggest that security officials may have provided support to Sanjeewa’s attackers, with police now investigating phone records of prison officers and other security personnel stationed at Boossa Prison.

In a surprising twist, it has been reported that a planned assassination attempt on Sanjeewa was set to take place on February 14, 2025, when he was supposed to be transported to the Attanagalla Magistrate’s Court.

However, due to a sudden health issue, the transfer was delayed, and the planned attack was thwarted.

It has also come to light that members of a crime group, led by ‘Kehelbaddara Padme’, were planning to assassinate Sanjeewa on February 14.

These individuals, operating from Dubai, had been in communication with their Sri Lankan counterparts to ensure the attack went as planned.

However, they were reportedly informed early in the morning on February 14 that Sanjeewa would not be brought to court.

As investigations continue, authorities are examining the possibility of prison officers or security personnel being involved in leaking sensitive information to underworld gangs, further complicating the case.

The police are conducting an extensive investigation into this angle, aiming to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy behind the murder.
