Starting July 1, Sri Lankans seeking foreign employment in non-domestic sectors for the first time will be required to certify their employment contracts through Sri Lankan diplomatic missions in their destination countries prior to registering with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE).

The new regulation applies to those migrating to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, the Maldives, Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea.

According to the SLBFE, the measure is intended to safeguard the rights of migrant workers by ensuring the authenticity and transparency of employment contracts before departure.

However, the rule does not apply to professionals migrating for self-employment. Exemptions will be granted to individuals who can produce passports indicating their profession or other supporting documents verifying their professional status in the destination country.

“This is a measure taken for the protection of migrant workers,” the Bureau said in an official statement.
