The United States Department of State has issued a travel advisory urging American citizens to exercise increased caution when travelling to Sri Lanka, citing concerns over civil unrest, terrorism, and the presence of landmines.
The advisory warns that protests related to Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic and political challenges may erupt without notice. “Police have used water cannons and tear gas to disperse protesters, and protests could turn violent with little or no warning,” the State Department said.
It also noted the continued risk of terrorist attacks, stating that past incidents in Sri Lanka have occurred with little or no forewarning.
The advisory highlights broader security concerns, including unexploded landmines in certain areas, particularly in former conflict zones in the Northern and Eastern provinces.
While not advising against travel outright, the State Department’s warning places Sri Lanka under a “Level 2” advisory, urging U.S. travellers to remain vigilant and monitor local developments closely.
