The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has summoned the Officer-in-Charge of the Homagama Police Station and two other police officers to provide information regarding the death of a man who was reportedly found dead inside a police cell at the station.
The three officers have been directed to appear before the Commission on Thursday (29), HRCSL Commissioner Attorney-at-Law Nimal G. Punchihewa has said.
As part of its investigation into the incident, the Commission has also recorded statements from several members of the deceased man’s family.
Meanwhile, the Western Province South Crime Division is conducting a separate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The division has recorded statements from several officers attached to the Homagama Police Station, including four police officers who were on duty at the time the deceased was arrested.
Earlier, steps were taken to suspend the Crimes OIC, the OIC of the Anti-Corruption and Raid Unit, and another police constable in connection with the incident.
Statements have also been obtained from four other police officers as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police have further stated that they intend to seek a court order to record a statement from another suspect who was arrested alongside the deceased and is currently being held in remand custody.
The HRCSL inquiry and the investigation by the Western Province South Crime Division are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the death and the conduct of the officers involved.
The summoning of the police officers comes as investigations continue into the death, with the HRCSL pursuing its inquiry alongside the separate criminal investigation.
