Shiranthi transferred to general ward at Welikada Prison

Shiranthi Rajapaksa, wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has reportedly been transferred to a general ward for female inmates at Welikada Prison after undergoing a medical examination at the National Eye Hospital, according to the Department of Prisons.

Prisons Spokesperson Senaka Pallethanne has said she was transferred to the general ward this morning (10), following her referral to the National Eye Hospital for medical attention.

Until this morning, Shiarnthi had been accommodated in a ward designated for female patients, he has been quoted as telling the media.

Doctors at the National Eye Hospital has examined her and prescribed medication, according to the Prisons Spokesman.

She was examined by a prison doctor yesterday (9), when several samples, including blood samples, were collected for medical tests.

Shiranthi was arrested on October 7 by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) over allegations that she misappropriated Rs. 10 million obtained from a State bank. The alleged offences are being investigated under the Corruption and Offences Against Public Property Act.

Following her production before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court, she was remanded until October 13.

Her transfer to the general ward comes as she remains in custody pending further proceedings in the case.
