Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) lawmaker Rohini Kaviratne has raised concerns over threats issued to a resident in the Yatawatta area of Matale by a former JVP Pradeshiya Sabha member.

According to MP Kaviratne, a group of JVP members, including former Yatawatta Pradeshiya Sabha member Manjula Prasad Samaraweera, had visited the residence of a person named Amal Attanayake, and threatened him for 22 minutes.

The video of the former JVP local councilor threatening Amal Attanayake had gone viral on social media.

Noting that citizens have the right to free expression through social media, she condemned attempts to suppress opposition activities, especially in the lead-up to the local government elections.

“With the local government elections approaching, the activities of the opposition in the Matale district cannot be undermined through threats and intimidation. All citizens have the right to express their opinions freely through social media. Let us all unite and protect that right,” she added.
