President again issues veiled threat to LG bodies over funding

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has once again issued a veiled threat to local government bodies whose power will go to a party other than the ruling National People’s Power (NPP).

He has now said twice that he would readily allot funds to NPP-controlled LG bodies, but would closely monitor before funding the others, because their (other parties’) history was unclean.

He was addressing a public rally in Mannar.

In the meantime, the Election Commission is to meet on 21 April and discuss the complaints it has received against Dissanayake’s remarks, according to its chairman Ananda Ratnayake.
