UNP invites youth to become future leaders

The United National Party (UNP) has decided to grant more opportunities for the youths as candidates at the upcoming local government election.

Its general secretary Thalatha Athukorale urged via social media for the youths to come forward to be future leaders on behalf of the nation if they were confident of being leaders with youthful vigour and courage.

Those who are willing to contest along with the generation that rescued the country can send in their applications before 10 March, she added.

Contesting together is the best option – Wajira

Meanwhile, UNP chairman Wajira Abeywardena said contesting the LG polls together will be the best option.

He was speaking to the media during a religious function at Purwarama Piriven Vihara at Karagoda in Galle recently.

Referring to ongoing talks with the SJB to form an alliance to contest the election, he said anyone opposing it should be treated as being mentally sick.

The other two options are contesting as the ‘elephant’ or under an independent symbol while retaining the individual political identity, he said.

If any group fails to do so, that will be a grave social tragedy, said Abeywardena.
