United Republic Front leader, Patali Champika Ranawaka, stated that the government is exerting severe pressure on the independence of the National Police Commission, alleging that the transfer of over 130 police officers without valid reason is a political vendetta.

He said that if police officers were transferred after removing posters of the ruling National People’s Power (NPP), as instructed by the Election Commission during the last presidential election, it constitutes a very serious issue.

Ranawaka claimed that such actions represent a politicization of the police, turning it into a force aligned with the ruling party.

He also alleged that the rule of law in the country has collapsed due to the arbitrary policies of individuals close to the President, and that this has led to people feeling compelled to take the law into their own hands.

Ranawaka expressed concerns over the deterioration of public security and law and order in the country.

He noted that since 01 January, 22 people have died in 28 shootings,  with 18 of these reportedly being the result of organized crime, according to police reports.

He also claimed that the police force has become dysfunctional, citing the remand of the IGP and ongoing conflicts between the acting IGP and senior officers.
