Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has expressed her views on the controversial remarks made by a Deputy Minister of the ruling National People’s Power government.

Deputy Minister Nalin Hewage had made a statement in Parliament on Saturday (22), targeting Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Rohini Kaviratne alleging that a newspaper advertisement had been published in which she had changed her name to Rohini Lamaratna.

When questioned by journalists regarding the Deputy Minister’s remarks at a media briefing held in Anuradhapura, she said the following.

“I don’t think it’s appropriate. I am very happy that Minister Nalinda Jayatissa immediately rejected it. He intervened to correct it. I am happy about that. Mistakes can happen. We are not trying to say that those mistakes are right because he is one of us.”

NPP MP Dr Kaushalya Ariyaratne too condemned Deputy Minister Hewage’s remarks, calling it “unparliamentary language” toward a female opposition MP.

Posting on Facebook, Ariyaratne said that as a woman who stands firmly for feminist principles, she cannot personally condone what transpired in parliament.
