Former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to make a return to Parliament, according to remarks made by former MP Premnath C. Dolawatte.

Speaking to local media this week, Dolawatte said that a sitting MP from the New Democratic Front is likely to step down, clearing the way for Wickremesinghe to re-enter the legislature through the national list. The decision on who will vacate the seat is said to be under discussion within party leadership.

Dolawatte credited Wickremesinghe’s leadership for the party’s performance at the last general election, including the two national list seats secured under the ‘cylinder’ symbol.

“Those 2 million votes were for Ranil Wickremesinghe. He is a committed democrat and a leader of the democratic process in this country. Parliament is in disarray and this is the right time for his return,” he said
