Attorney-at-law and political commentator Shiral Lakthilaka said that the salaries of 159 National People’s Power (NPP) Members of Parliament amounting to Rs. 4.77 million monthly are being deposited directly into the party’s bank account in Pelawatte.

Speaking at a public forum organised by the ‘Dinana Dakuna’ collective in Galle, Lakthilaka said that a total of Rs. 4.77 million, the combined monthly salary of the NPP MPs, is credited to the party’s account in Pelawatte.

Over the course of a year, this amounts to more than Rs. 57.24 million, he noted.

Branding the move as a misuse of public funds, Lakthilaka said the collective intends to pursue legal action.

“These are salaries paid from public taxes, and transferring them to a political party account without subjecting them to income tax raises serious questions about transparency and legality,” Lakthilaka said.
