The Sports Editor of the state-run Sunday Observer, Callistus Davy, had resigned last week due to editorial interference at the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (Lake House).

According to a report posted on Facebook by journalist Channaka de Silva, during a meeting with editorial staff, the Lake House Chairman had reportedly instructed journalists not to publish news critical of Sri Lanka Cricket.

“Davy challenged this, citing alleged corruption within the organization, and argued that suppressing such information rendered his role as sports editor pointless and promptly resigned. Davy, a veteran journalist with over 35 years’ experience in English-language media, is known for his integrity and courage. This is not the first time he has resigned over editorial interference. In 2016, he was forced to take leave after publishing an action shot from the Royal-Thomian cricket match instead of a photo of politicians at the trophy presentation. He also resigned from Ceylon Today after refusing to comply with a similar censorship request. Sri Lanka Cricket is reportedly a major sponsor of Lake House’s annual School Cricketer of the Year awards,” De Silva added.
