President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has urged citizens and public officials alike to commit to two to three years of collective, dedicated efforts in order to rebuild the nation and bring relief to its people. The call was made during a public rally held in support of upcoming local government elections.

Emphasizing a break from past governance practices, President Dissanayake declared that for the first time, a central government free from fraud and corruption had been established. He stressed that this moment presents an opportunity to reshape the entire administrative framework, beginning with local government institutions.

“This is a country where there were leaders who stole millions and billions,” the President said. “Fraud, corruption, and wasteful spending brought the economy to the edge of collapse. That is why local governments must also change. We now have a government that does not waste even a rupee of the people’s money.”

The President highlighted the importance of aligning the central government’s anti-corruption stance with reforms in local bodies, including Pradeshiya Sabhas and Urban Councils. He insisted that real transformation requires collaboration across all levels of government.

“To bring about this change, the President, Parliament, and local government bodies must all work together. If we dedicate ourselves to this task for two or three years, we can build a country where people experience real relief,” he added.
