Lalkantha says IMF wants to curtail public sector workforce

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has intimated that the government should look at reducing the bloated public sector, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation K.D. Lal Kantha said.

Noting that many appointments made to the public sector in the past were politically driven, he said plans are afoot to increase productivity of the public sector.

Addressing the media after a progress review meeting in Kandy, he highlighted that there is a significant shortage of officials who provide essential services, including professionals related to the agricultural sector, adding that a shortage of veterinarians and wildlife officers is particularly noticeable.

Stressing that the vacancies related to the agricultural sector will be filled as soon as possible, he said institutions such as the Paddy Marketing Board will be reactivated to provide relief to the public.
