Trade union representatives stormed out of a meeting with Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) officials in Colombo yesterday, voicing strong objections to the presence of the official overseeing the institution’s restructuring process.

The meeting, held at CEB’s head office, was attended by ministry secretaries, senior officials, and representatives from multiple trade unions.

However, tensions flared when the unions took exception to the participation of the CEB director responsible for implementing the government’s controversial restructuring plan.

In a show of protest, union members left the discussions abruptly, signalling continued resistance to proposed reforms which they claim could pave the way for privatisation and job insecurity.

Trade union leaders later confirmed that their ongoing work-to-rule campaign will continue today (21).

They also announced that a decisive meeting is scheduled for 24 September to determine their next steps, raising the possibility of further industrial action.
