Chief Justice Murdu Fernando is set to retire on July 27, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65, marking the end of a distinguished judicial career.
She is expected to deliver a formal farewell address before the Supreme Court on Friday (25).
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is expected to submit his nominee for the post of Chief Justice to the Constitutional Council next week.
The CC is scheduled to convene on Wednesday (23).
According to senior government sources, several leading contenders are under consideration. These include Supreme Court Justices Preethi Padman Surasena, S. Thurairaja, Yasantha Kodagoda, A.H.M.D. Nawaz, and Kumuduni Wickramasinghe.
Meanwhile, outgoing Chief Justice Fernando has also made two key recommendations.
She has proposed the appointment of Court of Appeal Judge Rathnapriya Gurusinghe to fill an existing vacancy on the Supreme Court bench and has recommended Supreme Court Justice Mahinda Samayawardhena to be appointed to the Judicial Service Commission.
