A gazette notification has been issued to maintain the existing fuel tax at the same level without revising it.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, has issued this gazette notification.

The gazette notification states that the tax imposed on petrol from 1 January 2024 at Rs. 72 per liter, super diesel at Rs. 57 per liter and auto diesel at Rs. 50 per liter will continue without any change.

Meanwhile, JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake addressing election rallies in 2024 stated that he will reduce the fuel prices by removing the Rs. 50 per liter tax on fuel which was imposed in 2022 to recover the debt taken over by the Treasury.

Despite President Dissanayake’ pledge to reduce tariffs imposed on fuel, the National People’s Power-led government has failed to implement it so far.
