The Free Media Movement has sent a letter to the Acting Inspector General of Police urging prompt legal action against the attacks carried out on journalists recently.

Signed by the organisation’s convener, Hana Ibrahim, and its secretary, Lasantha de Silva, the letter highlights two recent incidents of violence against journalists.

Thamil Selvam, an independent journalist reporting from Kilinochchi, has reportedly been subjected to physical assault and an attempted abduction.

Achala Upendra, the chairman of the Ampara District Media Association was assaulted for taking videos of an illegal sand mining operation in the area. His camera equipment was also damaged.

The Free Media Movement has called on the police to ensure swift and impartial investigations into these incidents to protect journalists and uphold press freedom in the country.
