Govt trying to reduce solar unit payment – Marikkar

Opposition lawmaker S.M. Marikkar says that the government is trying to reduce the payment given for solar units.

He said that the Electricity Board claims the amount produced by solar panels is high, and that within ten years, 1000 megawatts were expected from a million homes, but now about 1200 megawatts are being produced, and therefore they have to reduce the amount paid for energy from solar panels.

Addressing a press briefing held the Samagi Jana Balawegaya office in Colombo, he said;

“When the dollar was 180, solar unit cost 22 rupees, when the dollar was 350, it cost 37 rupees, when the dollar fell below 300, the amount paid decreased to 27 rupees, and now it is going to be reduced to 16 rupees.”

The SJB MP also challenged the NPP government to work instead of blaming others for their mistakes.

“When the power outage occurred across Sri Lanka last Sunday, the Energy Minister said it was because a monkey jumped into the Panadura grid. Even though 33,000MW transformers were burnt in the 1988-89 period and came under attack from the LTTE, the entire country did not lose power. However in the same evening, the Minister says that these are the mistakes of the previous government. Now its time to show the work,” he added.
