Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera claimed that he was subjected to inhumane treatment during his time in prison.
Gnanasara Thera, who was sentenced to nine months of simple imprisonment in a case related to the defamation of Islam, was released on bail this week by the Colombo High Court.
Speaking to the media following his release, Gnanasara Thera alleged that despite medical recommendations, prison authorities had denied him a homemade meal essential for his illness.
“The doctors had prescribed a daily homemade meal due to my health condition, but my request was continuously ignored. Was this a government decision or an arbitrary act by prison officials?” he questioned.
The Thera also highlighted what he described as unfair treatment of inmates housed in the Prison Hospital, claiming their medical needs were neglected due to pressure from influential figures, including social media personalities.
He alleged that prison officials, fearing accusations of favoritism toward high-profile inmates such as himself and former parliamentarian Duminda Silva, failed to provide adequate care.
“Even a request for basic necessities like milk powder and sugar, which would help inmates recover, was denied,” Gnanasara Thera said.
He urged prison authorities to ensure better treatment for the remaining inmates after his release.
