The United National Party (UNP) has confirmed that it is in talks with opposition parties to jointly establish control over the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC).
UNP National Organiser, Sagala Ratnayaka, emphasized that the goal of these discussions is to continue the efficient governance that the UNP has traditionally provided at the CMC.
Addressing the media in Colombo, Ratnayaka explained that the UNP has been providing effective services for a long period, and the party intends to uphold this legacy.
“We are engaging in talks with parties and independent groups in an effort to form a governance structure that serves the people honestly and effectively. Our priority is to ensure continuity in the services that have been provided under our leadership,” he said.
Ratnayaka further clarified that the UNP does not seek a formal coalition but aims for a collaborative effort based on mutual understanding and consensus.
“It is not about who supports whom; what is important is ensuring that we serve the people,” he said.
The UNP has been in discussions with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and other opposition groups to establish control over the CMC.
Ratnayaka indicated that no specific requests have been made regarding the appointment of the mayor, but the party is open to working with opposition parties to select a candidate who is widely accepted.
“Before the elections, we made an effort to work together. At that time, the SJB nominated Eran Wickramaratne as the mayoral candidate and requested support. However, it failed to materialize. The person nominated as mayor must be someone who is acceptable to all. If the leading party in the opposition proposes a widely accepted candidate, they will receive support from the other opposition parties as well,” Ratnayake observed.
He also emphasized that the primary objective of these discussions is not to seek personal or political gain, but to continue providing effective governance and services to the people of Colombo.
“The ultimate goal is to serve the people, not political maneuvering or alliances,” he added.
