SJB accuses NPP of political bribery

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has accused the ruling National People’s Power (NPP) of engaging in political bribery by offering financial provisions to independent groups and rival party members in a bid to take control of Local Government (LG) bodies where it lacks a majority.

Speaking to the media yesterday (27), SJB MP Mujibur Rahman claimed the NPP is attempting to secure leadership positions in over 100 LG bodies by striking deals with groups they previously condemned as corrupt.

“They called them thieves. Now they’re promising them financial incentives for votes,” Rahman alleged.

Recalling recent remarks by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva, who reportedly suggested that independent groups supporting NPP mayors would receive financial assistance, Rahman called the practice “vote-buying in disguise” and urged the Bribery Commission to launch an investigation.

Rahman also accused President Anura Kumara Dissanayake of abandoning his earlier democratic stance by manipulating council outcomes.

“They’re trying to hijack councils through backroom deals, not by respecting the will of the people,” he said.

He further alleged that the government is encouraging elected LG members to abstain from votes to block the formation of SJB-led administrations.

“Councilors must remain vigilant. The people voted for you — don’t let anyone misuse your mandate,” he added.
